The Chair promotes sustainability and innovation in Latin American agribusiness. Through collaboration with companies, it promotes applied research and develops solutions that strengthen the competitiveness and resilience of the sector to build a more sustainable future in the region.
Directed by Professor Luciano Ciravegna, the Steve Aronson Chair is dedicated to deepening academic and practical knowledge of sustainability within Latin America's agribusiness sectors, addressing the critical challenges that are shaping the region's future in global markets.
Latin America plays a crucial role as a global export hub for food and agricultural products. However, this role is increasingly threatened by the impacts of climate change and political volatility, factors that threaten the stability and resilience of its agricultural systems. In the face of these challenges, the Chair investigates how Latin American agribusinesses can adapt and develop resilience strategies that enable them to withstand these shocks and continue to participate effectively in global value chains.
Through research and study, the Chair aims to transmit the following knowledge to master's degree students, entrepreneurs, executives, academics and the general public:
- Deepen understanding of global value chains and explore strategies that enable Latin American producers to move up these chains.
- Analyze the interaction between sustainability practices and value chain positioning to understand how agribusiness companies can take advantage of emerging market trends that prioritize sustainability.
- Identify opportunities for companies to adopt best practices in terms of environmental management and corporate responsibility.
- Bridging the gap between sustainability research and strategic decision making to provide the knowledge and tools needed to thrive in an increasingly complex and competitive global marketplace.

Mr. Steve Aronson, founder of the Britt Group N.V. made a significant donation to INCAE Business School for the development of a Research Chair, known in other countries as an "Endowed Chair or Professorship". These chairs usually allocate resources to a professor to do research on a specific topic. Specifically, Mr. Aronson has directed that his funds be devoted to the study of the business strategies of agribusiness firms in developing economies, particularly in tropical Latin America, from southern Mexico to central Peru/Brazil. The fundamental objective is to help many companies in this sector to scale up from basic agriculture to create more and more value added. Something similar to what Mr. Aronson and his people have achieved with Grupo Britt N.V.

Dr. Ciravegna leads the research area at INCAE, having achieved the highest number of publications on the prestigious Financial Times Journal List among the faculty. Ciravegna has written four books with Financial Times Press, Routledge, and Palgrave. His scientific research has been widely cited (4512 citations according to Google Scholar in August 2024).
Dr. Ciravegna's research focuses on the industrial policies that have facilitated the process of "industrial upgrading" - the transformation of countries such as Taiwan and Israel from agricultural producers and textile maquiladoras to semiconductor exporters, and the importance of the geopolitical context for building similar policies in other regions such as Latin America. His work investigates foreign investment promotion policies, and the factors that allow the development of linkages so that such investment generates not only employment, but also local technological capacity and entrepreneurship.
Dr. Ciravegna has also been Professor at King's College London and Royal Holloway, University of London, and has held Visiting Professor roles at Hong Kong University, ESCP and Universidad de los Andes.
