VIVA Chair of Sustainability Schmidheiny Idea
Assistant professor in the areas of management accounting, management control, ethics and compliance at INCAE Business School. Member of the VIVA Idea Schmidheiny Sustainability Chair where he works with other colleagues in developing solutions that enable leaders to manage impact, based on an action research approach.
His research focuses on the interdisciplinary perspectives of accounting and control - specializing in the analysis and understanding of the accounting and control tools that interact in the dynamics of decision making in companies and institutions.
He began his academic career working in the teaching teams of NEOMA Business School in France. There he was an assistant in the Strategy department, as well as in the specialization in Controlling. He taught since 2005 organizational behavior and introduction to strategy. In 2008 he started working for HEC PARIS, in the Alternative Management specialization, a pedagogical project aimed at generating solutions to major social and environmental challenges from the management sciences. In this context, he worked as a project coordinator with large multinational companies, as well as NGOs, cooperatives and mutuals. In 2009 he entered the PhD program at HEC Paris, where he was in charge of the Cost Analysis Methods course.
Since his return to Costa Rica he has held different positions in the civil service being vice minister of Labor from 2016 to 2018 and member of different boards of directors and other high-level collegiate bodies. Today he is a member of the board of directors of one of the main banks in the Costa Rican market, as well as of several of its subsidiaries. In addition, he chairs the compliance committee of the conglomerate. From these positions he has been able to develop extensive experience in the fight and prevention of fraud and corruption.
D. in Management Sciences with a specialization in Controlling from HEC Paris. He also holds an M.Sc. in Comparative Development Studies from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales de Paris (EHESS). Professor Cuenca has taught at HEC Paris and has been a visiting professor at the Sorbonne University (PARIS I, Panthéon Sorbonne).
Professor Cuenca holds an MsC in Management from NEOMA Business School, an MsC in Comparative Development Studies from EHESS and a PhD in Management Sciences from HEC PARIS.

Since his return to Costa Rica, he has held different positions in the public service being Vice Minister of Labor from 2016 to 2018 and member of different boards of directors and other high-level collegiate bodies. He has extensive experience in combating and preventing fraud and corruption. He has been able to put this experience into practice both in the public positions he has held and in his academic work. He is currently a member of the board of directors of one of the main banks in the Costa Rican market as well as of several of its subsidiaries. In addition, he chairs the compliance committee of the conglomerate.
