Professor Raquel Chanto obtained her D.Phil. (Ph.D.) in Political Science from the University of Oxford. She received her M.A. in Public Affairs from Princeton University and her B.A. and J.D. from the University of Costa Rica. She was awarded the Fulbright Scholarship from the U.S. Department of State, the St. Catherine's College Postgraduate Scholarship at the University of Oxford, and the Wallace Watson Scholarship, also at Oxford.
Dr. Chanto's research focuses on two areas: corruption-especially its political implications and its relationship with the modernization processes of societies-and democracy, with emphasis on electoral processes. Her teaching and consulting interests include political analysis of Latin American countries and political leadership communication.
Throughout her career, Professor Chanto has served as an advisor and political analyst in the Presidency of the Republic of Costa Rica, the Secretariat for Political Affairs of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB). She was a negotiator at the Ministry of Foreign Trade of Costa Rica and has coordinated the group of experts in Electoral Observation Missions of the OAS in Peru, Mexico, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, El Salvador and Guatemala.
