Assertiveness is the ability to express feelings, ideas and opinions in a free, clear and simple way, communicating at the right time and to the right person; moreover, it is a behavior that allows us to defend the rights of each person without attacking or being attacked.

But perhaps most importantly, it is the ingredient that will contribute the most to gaining the respect and trust necessary to persuade and convince any audience.

The current director of the Board of Directors of INCAE, María Eugenia Brizuela, exposes the seven keys to assertive communication:
"Be clear: Avoid ambiguities.
"Be concise: Don't decorate the information, don't spin the subject.
"Be concrete: Avoid abstractions.
"Be correct: Include everything that needs to be said, even if there are things that hurt. Don't paint half-truths or tell white lies.
"Be consistent: Messages get lost in the clutter; always deliver a message according to a particular order.
"Be complete: Don't leave out something major. It is not about lying, but understand that the omission of a detail may prevent a better understanding of the circumstances.
"Be polite: Avoid aggressiveness. The tone of voice is fundamental, in the end this is how you gain the audience's receptivity.

"Assertiveness is developed by being active, direct and sincere, negotiating and communicating an impression of respect for others, that's where listening is so important."
