Successfully managing a company from the managerial chair is, by itself, one of the greatest challenges a professional can face. Being an outstanding manager requires many elements to be taken into account, almost mandatory capabilities to excel.

Professor Esteban Brenes, Academic Director of the Senior Management Programdivides these capabilities into emotional and intellectual, and each of them has factors that determine them:

Emotional capacity

-Having the ability to understand the rules and culture of the organization and its environment. This allows us to perform better in any environment. Culture can be changed. If I do not understand the rules and the current culture of the organization, trying to change it without that ability to understand is impossible.

-Having the ability to communicate appropriately in a way that will bring your audience to a yes for your approach is not manipulation, it is persuasion, it is an influencing skill. This is not manipulation, it is persuasion, it is a skill of influence. Are we clear about the direction? How can we communicate with our audience so that we can leave together to the same place? That skill is learned.

-Being sensitive to the new trends of conscious capitalism. That is, it is not just about making money. It is making money or creating shareholder value, but, in addition, it must have a meaning, a purpose and thus develop compassion, service and well-being inside and outside the company.

-Being socially responsible. We have to create shareholder value because that is what business is all about, but we have to do it with the awareness that we have to be contributing to society.

Intellectual Capacity

-Be a person with business intuition. Intuition and judgment are learned with experience, but many times experience doesn't let us see sideways, it deceives us, we get tricked and we always want to do the same thing.

-Seeks knowledge of the local and international environment and analyzes it. Knows himself, but constantly trains himself.

-Search knowledge of their industry and trends in adjacent and converging industries and analyzes it. That is, it is a person that business intuition is strengthened with knowledge of the environment and industry to make better strategic decisions, more timely and with a better vision of what is happening.

-Seek to strengthen your personal skills and capabilities in the financial area. An outstanding manager is an expert in finance. We cannot have a general manager in a company if he has not strengthened his capabilities in the financial area. The knowledge of your business model in numbers is absolutely fundamental.

-Understand the true source of innovation. It has the ability to understand that innovation comes from employees, customers, suppliers, etc. and what must be established is a mechanism to capture ideas, process them and innovate.
