On January 28 and 29, 2025, INCAE Business School held the Case Method Teaching Workshop, an intensive seminar designed for professors interested in perfecting their teaching skills with this recognized method. The activity brought together 64 participants from 12 countries, who immersed themselves in an interactive learning space led by outstanding INCAE professors.

Over the course of two days, attendees participated in theoretical and practical sessions aimed at improving the planning and execution of case-based lessons. Key topics addressed included:

  • Introduction to the case method
  • The teaching-learning contract
  • Planning and development of a class session
  • Use of the blackboard as a pedagogical tool
  • Effective feedback mechanisms
  • Coping with challenging situations in the classroom

The workshop was given by Professors Niels Ketelhöhn, John C. Ickis and Carlos A. Rodríguez.

 

 

Day 1: Building a solid foundation

The opening day began with a welcome address by Professor John Ickis, who presented the relevance of the case method in leadership training. Subsequently, the following sessions were held:

  • The teaching-learning contract, where participants analyzed the relationship between instructor and student through the Ernie Budding case (A), (B).
  • Development of the teaching plan, led by Professor Niels Ketelhöhn, with discussion of the EYCA case.
  • Preparation of the lesson plan, where strategies to encourage student readiness and structure an effective teaching note were discussed.

The day concluded with a networking dinner at the Luis Poma Forum, allowing attendees to exchange experiences in a relaxed atmosphere.

 

 

Day 2: Deepening the teaching experience

The second day of the workshop focused on the impact of the instructor on the learning experience.

  • Interactive sessions on the case of Professor Graham and Ms. Macomber, led by Carlos Rodriguez, where we reflected on the selection of questions and their influence on the dynamics of the class.
  • Case Discussion Stone Finchto analyze the introduction of innovations in traditional organizations.
  • Visit to INCAEs Virtual Classroom, led by Professor Elena Fumagalli, where participants learned about the platform and its functionalities, exploring how to integrate technology into the case-based teaching methodology.
  • Development of the teaching note, with Professor Niels Ketelhöhn, addressing the key components for structuring an effective session.
  • Closing of the workshop and Q&A session with John Ickis, where participants discussed their learnings and strategies to apply in their own classrooms.
  • The presentation of certificates, Prof. John Ickis and Prof. Alexandra Esquiven presented the certificates to the participants, in an atmosphere of camaraderie.

 

 

The Case Method Teaching Workshop reaffirmed INCAE Business School's commitment to academic excellence and the training of highly qualified teachers. Thanks to the methodology used, participants not only strengthened their ability to design and conduct interactive classes, but also acquired practical tools to face challenges in the classroom and improve the learning experience of their students.
